Boundaries Without Walls

Explore healthy boundaries, privacy, friends and former partners, and how to protect yourself without using rules to control another person.

A boundary describes what you need and what action you will take if an agreement is not respected. It is not a way to control another person. Boundaries can concern time, privacy, communication, friendships, former partners, or physical intimacy.

A clear boundary is specific, mutual where appropriate, and open to discussion. A demand that isolates someone, monitors every conversation, or uses threats to secure compliance is not made healthy by calling it a boundary.

Some boundaries protect a person from genuine danger. Others need adjustment as two people learn how to share a life. The relevant question is not whether a rule sounds strict or flexible; it is whether both people can consent, speak honestly, and remain safe.

Questions this guide can help you explore

  • What is happening in the situation, specifically?
  • What is a fact, what is an interpretation, and what remains unknown?
  • What would make a next step feel safe and voluntary?
